“It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.” (Hebrews 6:4-6)
This passage is often misunderstood, but its message is clear: it is impossible for those who have truly experienced the power and goodness of God to later reject Him and then be brought back to repentance. This is not because God is unwilling to forgive, but because those who have experienced the fullness of God’s presence and power and then reject Him have committed a grave offense. They are, in effect, crucifying the Son of God all over again.
So what does this passage mean for us? It means that we must take our faith seriously, and not take God’s mercy and forgiveness for granted. It means that we must continually seek to deepen our relationship with God, and not become complacent or apathetic in our walk with Him. And it means that we must always be mindful of the gravity of sin, and the importance of living a life that honors God. May we take these words to heart, and may we strive to live lives that are pleasing to God.
