For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge. – 2 Peter 1:5
As believers, we are called to continually grow and mature in our faith. In 2 Peter 1:5, Peter writes, “For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge.” Peter is emphasizing the importance of intentionally adding qualities to our faith that will help us become more like Christ. We are not meant to stay stagnant in our spiritual journey, but rather to continually strive for growth and maturity.
The qualities that Peter lists – virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love – are not meant to be isolated characteristics, but rather interconnected aspects of a life surrendered to Christ. As we supplement our faith with these qualities, we become more well-rounded and effective disciples. We are better equipped to navigate life’s challenges, to love and serve others, and to bring glory to God.
So let us take Peter’s words to heart today. Let us make every effort to supplement our faith with the qualities that Peter lists. Let us ask God to help us grow in virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. As we do, we will become more like Christ, and we will be empowered to live out our faith in a way that brings glory to God and blesses those around us.
