“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” – Matthew 5:8
So, what does it take to see God? Purity. It takes Purity!
In 1 Timothy 1:17, Paul describes some attributes of God to his son, Timothy. He describes God as immortal, invisible and eternal. Which means God lives forever and is invisible, and we could never see Him with our own eyes. In Matthew, Jesus audaciously asserts that He alone has seen God. Why could Jesus see God, who is invisible? Because He had a pure heart. He tells us that only by that state may we also see God. This is not to say that God is not accessible, it only confirms that you have to be at the spiritual standing of Jesus to have that access.
In the Old Testament, Moses sees the back of the Lord and gets transformed into His likeness. The Israelites who were beneath the mountain at the time account that Moses was radiating after the encounter, and he had to wear a veil to prevent the Israelites from beholding the light that emitted from his face. Why, because their hearts were dull. A dull heart is a heart filled with impure thoughts, conceptions and ideas. A person with a dull heart cannot behold the glory of God. By believing in Christ, we are opening ourselves up for the veil to be unveiled and for our hearts to be purified. “For to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away.” – 2 Corinthians 3:14
Being cleansed by the Word and Spirit is what it means to have a pure heart. A person with a pure heart subjects every idea, statement, and deed to the standard of God. In a nutshell, a person with a pure heart is one who has been redeemed by the blood of Christ and consistently makes the effort to remain in Him. Jesus refers to these people are “blessed”, He does so because through Him we have the privilege to see God in all His glory. Of all the blessings we have in Christ, that is the most glorious and profound!
Today, let’s ask God to create in us a clean heart and renew the right Spirit within us, Amen!
