“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground”. – Psalm 143:10 (NIV)
Most of us approach life like we’re driving with a GPS that we only turn on when we’re already hopelessly lost. We try to navigate the twists and turns of our careers, relationships, and personal struggles on our own intuition, only calling out for a “recalculating” moment when we hit a dead end. But David’s prayer in Psalm 143:10 flips the script. He doesn’t ask for a map to his own desired destination; he asks for a transformation of his own heart: “Teach me to do your will.” This is a request for a daily apprenticeship. It’s an admission that while we might be experts at “doing our own thing,” we are often beginners at doing the right thing.
The power of this prayer lies in the short phrase that follows: “for you are my God.” This isn’t just a polite title; it’s a declaration of trust and a reminder of who is actually in the driver’s seat. When we acknowledge Him as “my God,” we are acknowledging that His perspective is higher and His intentions are better than our own. It shifts our motivation from “I have to obey” to “I want to follow because I belong to the One who created me.” It’s much easier to follow a path when you trust the person who paved it. We stop viewing God’s will as a restrictive cage and start seeing it as the very foundation of our identity.
Finally, David asks for a specific kind of guidance: “may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.” Life is rarely a smooth, paved highway; it’s often filled with rocky inclines and slippery slopes that threaten to trip us up. The “level ground” isn’t a promise that life will be easy or devoid of challenges, but rather a promise of spiritual stability. When the Holy Spirit leads, He provides the balance we lack, helping us keep our footing even when the world feels like it’s shifting beneath us. It is a prayer for a steady heart and a clear path, trusting that even in the wilderness, the Spirit knows the way to solid ground.
