“If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?” (Psalm 130:3)

The apostle Paul states in Romans 6:23 that death—both physical and spiritual—is a direct consequence of sin. As we understand it, death is complete separation from God, and it is terrible to be apart from God’s presence. Our entire being is ultimately sustained by him, the creator of life and the origin of everything. While in ponder, the Psalmist poses a vital question, one which happens to be our verse for today – “If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?” (Psalm 130:3)

As humans, sin isn’t something we can totally abstain from. No man living can exclaim that they’ve lived their whole life without sin and the Bible makes it clear, “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23. In spite of this dreadful fact, God has provided a means of reconciliation. One that involves believing in His son, Christ Jesus (John 3:16). Recognizing this truth humbles us and redirects our focus from self-righteousness to dependence on God’s mercy.

The psalmist’s question, “who could stand?” emphasizes our need for God’s grace and forgiveness. Without His mercy, we’d be unable to stand before Him. This verse encourages us to approach God with honesty, acknowledging our shortcomings and seeking His forgiveness. Let us prioritize humility, recognizing our limitations and seeking God’s mercy. May we approach Him with sincerity, trusting in His forgiveness and redemption. By doing so, we can experience the freedom and peace that comes from knowing and following God.
