Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal – John 6:27
Our verse for today is a powerful reminder of what is truly important to us Christians. Jesus is saying that we should not focus on temporary things, like food that perishes, but on eternal things, like the food that He offers.
Jesus made this statement in response to the crowd’s request for bread, after Jesus had fed the 5,000 with five loaves and two fish. The crowd had been following Jesus, not just because of His teachings, but also because of the miraculous food He had provided. They were seeking physical bread, but Jesus knew they needed spiritual nourishment. By saying what He did, Jesus was shifting the focus from physical needs to spiritual needs. He was emphasizing that He was the bread of life, and that those who came to Him would receive eternal life.
While physical food is necessary for our bodies, it is not enough to sustain us spiritually. Jesus is offering us spiritual food that will give us eternal life. He is saying that He is the bread of life, and that those who come to Him seeking a genuine relationship will not be spiritually malnourished and will never hunger or thirst again.
So let us ask ourselves today: what are we working for? Are we focusing on temporary things, or are we seeking eternal things? Let us remember that Jesus offers us spiritual food, food that will give us eternal life. May we seek Him, and may we find satisfaction and fulfillment in Him. May we be people who are focused on what is truly important, and may we experience the joy and peace that comes from knowing Jesus.
