“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (Luke 16:13)
Where does your loyalty lie? Does it lie with your political party? Your job? Your business or an association you are affiliated with? I witnessed two lawmakers profess their loyalty to an association they are both a part of. Without shame, without hesitation. In that televised session, loyalty was best expressed.
In our verse for today, Jesus teaches us, His followers, a fundamental truth about the nature of devotion and loyalty. He tells us that we cannot divide our hearts between two competing masters. We must choose who or what we will serve. This is not just a practical reality, but a spiritual one as well. When we try to serve two masters, we will inevitably be torn between competing loyalties and priorities.
So let us ask ourselves, dear friends, who or what is our master? Is it God, or is it something else? Is it wealth, status, power, or something else entirely? Let us be honest with ourselves, and let us examine our hearts and our lives. Let us choose to serve God alone, and let us be devoted to Him with all our hearts, souls, and minds. May we be faithful servants of the one true God.
