“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 3:20)
As followers of Christ, we are often caught between two worlds. On the one hand, we live in this physical world, with all its joys and struggles. But on the other hand, we are citizens of a heavenly kingdom, with all its promises and blessings. In this verse, Paul reminds us that our true citizenship is in heaven, and that we should be living with a sense of anticipation and expectation, eagerly awaiting the return of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
This truth should fundamentally shape the way we live our lives. When we remember that our citizenship is in heaven, we begin to see the world in a different light. We realize that the things of this world are temporary and fleeting, and that our true treasure is stored up for us in heaven. This perspective gives us the courage to live counter-culturally, to stand out from the crowd, and to live with a sense of purpose and direction.
So let us live as citizens of heaven, dear friends. Let us eagerly await the return of our Savior, Jesus Christ. May we be people who are shaped by the promises and blessings of the heavenly kingdom, and may we live with a sense of hope and anticipation, knowing that our true home is in heaven.
