Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. – Matthew 5:3

Beloved, today we will look at one of the beatitudes of Christ. He says that blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. A person who is “poor in spirit,” refers to someone who recognizes their spiritual poverty and acknowledges their need for God. Being poor in spirit means being humble, recognizing one’s limitations, sins, and dependence on God for spiritual fulfillment and guidance.

Jesus called the “poor in spirit” blessed because in recognizing their spiritual poverty and need for God, they are open to receiving the kingdom of heaven. By acknowledging their dependence on God and their lack of self-sufficiency, they are in a position to receive God’s grace, mercy, and blessings. Jesus emphasized the importance of humility and recognizing our need for God as a key aspect of spiritual growth and closeness to Him.

An example of someone being “poor in spirit” in the Bible is seen in the story of the tax collector and the Pharisee in Luke 18:9-14. The tax collector, aware of his sins and shortcomings, humbly prayed to God, saying, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” He recognized his spiritual poverty and need for God’s forgiveness. In contrast, the Pharisee boasted about his righteousness and looked down on others. Jesus praised the tax collector’s humility, showing that being “poor in spirit” and recognizing our need for God’s mercy is valued in the eyes of God.

We should all learn from the humility of the tax collector. As children of God, we must not develop an entitled mindset when approaching God. Rather, we must go to Him with all the humility there is. This means approaching life with a humble and open heart, recognizing that we need God’s help in all aspects of our lives. By seeking God’s wisdom, following His teachings, and staying connected through prayer and meditation, we can embody the idea of being “poor in spirit” and experience the blessings that come with it.
