God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth – John 4:24

Worshipping God in spirit means to develop a relationship with Him by engaging in a form of worship that is deeply spiritual and sincere, coming from the heart and soul rather than just outward actions. In John chapter 4, we see the woman by the well citing the mountains as a place of worship to Samaritans, although the Jews believed Jerusalem was the only legitimate place to worship God.

In correcting this error, Jesus noted that in a very short time to come, outward appearances and worship would no longer matter. Rather, true worshippers of God will be those who develop and maintain a relationship with Him and remain in constant fellowship with His Spirit. What Jesus meant was that you cannot go to the mountain, Jerusalem or church on a Sunday and keep it Holy, then go back to your own ways during the week. A two phased life will not be accepted. In this dispensation, that form of worship is an error.

What is approved, rather, is a constant desire to learn scripture, pray, love all men and remain in constant fellowship with God at all times. There will be no room for physical and false worship, only spiritual and true worship. As children of God, we must understand and fully embrace this truth. We must challenge ourselves beyond keeping up with physical appearances, as most people do. We must rather, deepen our spiritual connection with God by spending time in His presence through prayer and meditation, while allowing ourselves to be transformed by the mighty power of His word. This is what spiritual and true worship is about. May the good Lord help us, Amen.
