Go Home and Tell Them

Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” – Mark 5:19

The miracle of the mad man in Geresene is a mighty display of God’s immense love and desire to save everyone held in bondage by the enemy. Mark 5 recounts a story of a man who was possessed by impure Spirits, lived in tombs and cut himself all day. It is recorded that no amount of chains could bind him down. He was fearful, and no one could go close to him.

In the subsequent verse, we see Jesus preaching a number of sermons to a crowd on the other part of the Sea of Galilee, which was opposite to the region where this mad man was. Whether Jesus knew this mad man or not is yet to be known. However, a little while after sunset He asks his disciples to go over to the side of which this man was.

When Jesus got off the boat, this man with impure spirits run towards him and fell on his feet, screaming: “Jesus, son of man have you come to destroy us before our time.” Jesus asks who are you,to which the man responds, “I am legion.” Signifying he was possessed by many evil spirits. Jesus goes on to deliver this man by casting this pigs into a herd of swine. Realizing what had happened and who Jesus was, this man offers to follow Jesus. Jesus declined, instead he tells him to testify what had happened to him to the town folk.

In just a day, this man who seemed destined for destruction was delivered from the possession of impure spirits and made an evangelist of the gospel, depicting God’s power to change narratives and save his children. It is important for us believers to not give up on ourselves and other people who seem far off from the Lord.

Our main lesson of note has to do with the assignment Christ gave this man after delivering him. He said to him to go tell his people what had happened. More often than not many of us refrain from sharing our testimonies of deliverance. Scripture says in Revelation that they overcame by the power of the lamb and by the word of their testimony. This means that our deliverance isn’t truly complete if we fail to share the testimony of what God has done for us.

It is my prayer that we will overcome the urge not to share our testimonies, and that we will steadfastly pray to God and rely on him entirely for deliverance and salvation; no one is beyond saving, no situation is too overwhelming for God,may the good Lord help us in Jesus name, Amen!
