They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us. – 1 John 2:19

Our verse for today reflects a historical context within early Christian communities. During the time of the early church, there were instances of individuals who professed faith but later departed from the church, revealing a lack of true belonging and commitment to Christ. This passage addressed the challenges faced by early Christians in discerning genuine believers from those who only superficially adhered to the teachings of the church.

As we navigate life, we will encounter various influences and distractions that may seek to lead us astray. This morning, we are challenged to stay at the feet of God regardless of what may be going on. We are reminded to be steadfast in our faith and look only to God, so we do not lose hope and depart the church, as some of the early Christians did.

Our verse for today also serves as an indicator that not every relationship is meant to be permanent. It reminds us of the importance of authenticity and commitment in our relationships, a key indicator that not everyone with us at a certain point in life will be permanent. We, as Christians, must prepare our hearts and lean on the fact that people are temporal and that only God’s love is permanent.

I pray that we will continue to anchor ourselves in the truth of God’s word and the strength of His love, so we can discern those who walk alongside us in sincerity, and that in due time, we will get the strength to let go of all temporal relationships, in Jesus name.
