The Joy of a Father

“The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him.” – Proverbs 23:24

Today is the day for fathers, and rightly so, fathers ought to be celebrated. What would the world be without them? Fathers have significant responsibilities in the family and society. They are tasked with providing emotional support, guidance, and protection to their children. A father’s role includes being a leader of the family and a positive role model, imparting values, and teaching life skills.

If there is one thing I’ve learned over the years, it is how expensive the price for Fatherhood is. A sacrificial venture, and for most men the challenge is one that urges them to find their noblest selves in the deepest parts of their souls. If there is anything children could repay their fathers with, it is to be the best versions of themselves. The perfect example for those to come.

As seen in our verse for today, a Father’s greatest pride is seeing that his children have grown to be righteous, and have become examples of truth, love and devotion. “The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him.” The verse beautifully captures the joy and pride a father feels when their child lives righteously and wisely. It emphasizes the deep sense of fulfillment and happiness that comes from seeing your child making positive choices and growing in wisdom.

As we celebrate Father’s Day, let us remember this, and let us challenge ourselves to be better people. Righteous people. People of the light. Let us endeavor to make our fathers proud, and may we endeavor live up to the challenge when the need arises, passing on wisdom and guidance to our children; and their children. In Jesus name, Amen.
