The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. -2 Peter 3:9
There is a song that aches my heart so much every time I hear it. In English, it translates “These pastors keep lying to us, Christ would’ve come already if the second coming were true.” A great deal of uneasiness sits my soul when it comes on. Why would anyone doubt the word of God? After all that has been said and done? After all we’ve seen? It’s a sad reality a lot of us who eagerly await the second coming of Christ must embrace. That assertion could not be more ignorant as it is canal, but you wouldn’t fault him, would you?
It’s been two thousand years and over since Christ ascended to Heaven, suffering has increased immensely since then. Hatred, oppression, wars, slavery, colonization, a lot of very painful things have happened to mankind. A lot of painful things have occurred to His children. If He were so loving, He surely wouldn’t watch on for this long, will he ?
In our verse for today, Apostle Peter gives us the reason for this supposed “delayed” second coming of Christ. He first precedes our verse for today with the point that “with the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like a day.” He teaches us that our Lord and savior is patient with sinners, His long-suffering nature makes Him give sinners chance after chance, as He wills for them to repent and turn to Him so they can avoid the fires of Hell. He has made room for them to experience His love. The unexplainable love of God.
So, in response to the singer referenced above and all who share a similar sentiment, God is not a man that He should lie. Nor is He a man to forget. Whatever He has said, He will do it. He is waiting on you, on me, and everyone else who has been crippled by sin to turn to Him. To repent of our sins and count on Him for strength to walk this life. I pray the eyes of our understanding will be opened so that we can fully embrace this truth. In Jesus name, Amen.
