And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you – Exodus 3:14
According to the Bible, Moses was born during a time when the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt. In order to save him from Pharaoh’s decree to kill all Hebrew baby boys, Moses’ mother placed him in a basket and set him adrift on the Nile River. Miraculously, Pharaoh’s daughter found him and took him in as her own son.
After Pharaoh’s daughter found Moses in the basket, she asked Moses’ sister if she could find a Hebrew woman to nurse him. Moses’ sister then brought their mother, Jochebed, and she was able to nurse Moses during his early years. Due to this, young Moses learned of his Jewish origin and became self aware of the suffering of his people.
In Exodus 2, we learn how Moses kills an Egyptian for mistreating a Jew, the aftermath of his action led him to flee Egypt. Moses became a shepherd in the land of Midian, tending to the flocks of his father-in-law, Jethro. He lived a humble life in the wilderness. It was during this time that he had his encounter with God, who revealed himself to Moses in a burning bush.
Growing up in a background with so many gods, Moses asks the God in the burning bush who he is, to which God answers, “I AM THAT I AM.” God says this to Moses to prove His self sufficient nature. At that point in history and in Moses’ life, He was to be a deliverer of the Jews from slavery. In subsequent chapters, He is a provider, a healer, a shield and a guide. In other words, HE IS WHO HE IS to His children at every phase of their lives. He is the healer when we’re sick, a guide when we’re lost. A protector when we’re in danger, a deliverer when we’re in bondage etc etc. In our time of distress, we can call on Him. He says to Paul, “my grace is sufficient.” He is saying to us today, “I AM THAT I AM, when you have me you have everything.”
It is my prayer that we can all recognize that God is fully capable of meeting our needs and guiding us. I pray we can surrender our worries and place our faith in Him in our time of distress and trouble, Amen.
