Much More

Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? – John 14:1-2

Many of the Jews during the time of Christ were hoping for a Messiah who would deliver them from Roman rule. The disciples, being Jews themselves, shared similar expectations. They anticipated that Jesus, as the promised Messiah, would establish a physical kingdom and overthrow the Roman authorities. What they didn’t know was that Jesus had something much more greater for them. His focus was on eternal matters rather than earthly kingdoms. However, Jesus had a different mission. He came to bring spiritual salvation and establish the Kingdom of God in the hearts of people.

The disciples were sad when they learned Christ was about to be crucified. They imagined the worse, the thought of losing their leader evoked a great sense of hopelessness. This is because they had developed a close bond with Jesus. They had spent a significant amount of time with Him, learning from His teachings and witnessing His miracles. They had grown to love Him and depend on His guidance. But He was not just leaving. He had to leave earth so he can prepare a place for all who believed in Him.

In our verse for today, He tells them that “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?”He reassures them that even though He would be leaving them physically, He had them in mind and that He was preparing something much more greater than the kingdom they envisioned. They had to lose Jesus momentarily, so they can have a Him forever, plus the kingdom to come.

Many of us have grown attached to relationships, people, a job, a house, something that gives us relief and joy, and we dread the thought of losing it. However, that which gives us comfort today may be a hindrance to our potential, blessings and breakthroughs. I spoke to an elderly person who had a difficult childhood that has many episodes of hunger and scarcity. Eventually moved in with an Aunt who treated her like royalty. Eventually, she had to drag herself from her Aunt’s place to fully realize her potential.

God wants you to be better and sometimes you may not experience hardships as others do, but you’d have to forfeit that comfort. He may want you away from that relationship, that job or house so you can fully realize your potential. Are you going to answer the call? Or you will hold on to the blessing you have today? Today, I pray that we accept our Lord’s ways as higher and submit our lives to him. Take it into prayer and accept God’s will for what it is. In Jesus name, Amen.
