The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want – Psalm 23:1
David was a young shepherd boy from Bethlehem. He was the youngest son of Jesse and had seven older brothers. David spent his days tending to his father’s sheep, he was a wonderful shepherd. He took great care of his father’s sheep, protecting them from predators and leading them to green pastures and still waters. Scripture describes him as attentive, brave, and dedicated to ensuring the well-being of his flock.
These qualities of a good shepherd also reflect David’s character and his role as a leader in his later years. As he fled from King Saul, he often found himself isolated and separated from his family and friends. However, even in those moments of solitude, he found solace in his faith and relationship with God. He wrote many Psalms during this time, pouring out his heart to God and finding comfort in His presence. It was a time of growth, faith, and dependence on God.
At the recital of Psalm 23, we should reflect the goodness of God in our lives. In times past, now and in the future. We should recall the times God came through for us when all the odds were against us and we should acknowledge that since He is the same yesterday, today and forever; He will guide and save us from every snare of the enemy. Amen.
