Blessed are the Merciful

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. – Matthew 5:7

Matthew captures one of the most profound sermons Jesus gave while on earth. Christian scholars and believers like to call it the beatitudes of Jesus Christ. In this sermon, our master touched on several keys of the kingdom. Mercy, forgiveness, peace, humility etc.

Today, let us to consider Matthew 5:7, which speaks of mercy. Jesus says that “blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” Mercy is an attribute of our maker, it is one that all of us who have been created in His image should endeavor to walk in. When we say God is merciful and forgiving, we mean that God shows compassion and grants forgiveness to those who seek it. It means that God is understanding and willing to pardon our mistakes and shortcomings when we sincerely repent and ask for forgiveness. God’s mercy and forgiveness offer us hope, redemption, and a chance to start anew.

Let’s consider the story of Jesus and the woman caught in adultery. A group of people brought a woman to Jesus who had been caught in the act of adultery, which was considered a serious offense at that time. The people wanted to stone her, but Jesus responded with compassion and forgiveness. He challenged the crowd, saying, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” This showed God’s justice in the sense of offering forgiveness and giving people a chance to change and be redeemed. It’s a powerful example of God’s mercy and love.

God expects us to extend mercy by treating others with compassion, understanding, and forgiveness, just as He does for us. We can strive to be empathetic towards others, seek to understand their perspectives, and offer forgiveness when they make mistakes. By extending mercy to others, we reflect God’s love and grace in our interactions with those around us. We also obtain mercy from Him, which is very vital to our Christian walk.

I pray that we will all obtain the grace to extend mercy to everyone and walk in this light thereof. In Jesus name, Amen.
