But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. – Romans 5:8
How unconditional can your love be? Are you like the musician who swore to catch a Grenade for the one he loved? Could you put your head on the railway for the one you love? Many people swear many things, make many proclamations and do many things for the people they love, but can all of that be categorized under unconditional love? As we learned previously, Saint Damien’s voyage to Molokai and his subsequent sacrifice towards the lepers in that town was a great demonstration of unconditional love.
I overheard a conversation between a guardian of two children and a person who seemed to be her friend. This woman seemed to like one child more than the other and her excuse for loving the other less is that, the child is troublesome. God does not command us to love people based on how adaptable we are to them or how peaceful we are with them. He commands us to love everyone with an unconditional love, and He demonstrates that to us in the greatest way possible. By offering his son as a sacrifice for the atonement of sin for all mankind,as shown in our verse for today. – But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)
To love unconditionally is to love like God,it’s to love pure and as Christians,we have been called to extend this light to everyone, including those who do not share the same opinion with us or those who continually gives us trouble. If Jesus prayed for the soldiers who were nailing him to the cross, then we also have a charge to love without conditions, even to people who nail us to our cross and outsiders alike.
Today, we pray that the Lord will give us a heart as pure as His, and increase our capacity to love beyond barriers, stigma and conditions. May the Lord help us, Amen.
