…Love keeps no record of wrong – 1 Corinthians 13:5
In primary three, Miss Danso, my then class teacher would make us sing on Wednesday mornings before classes begun. One of those songs was titled “forgive and forget.” Although I do not remember the lyrics, the theme has stayed with me till this day. It simply implied that forgiveness was not complete without forgetting.
In Isaiah 43:25 we hear God declare of himself, “I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.” A message that confirms the earlier submission, that forgiveness is not complete without forgetting. God expects us to thread the same path, forgive and completely forget. We cannot claim to forgive if we hold on to things that were done against us. It will weigh us down.
In our verse for today, Apostle Paul reiterates the same notion, he says that to love is to forgo all wrongs that have been done against you – “love keeps no record of wrong.” The Corinthians church at the time had a lot of differences and had misunderstood the message of the good news, it was important that Paul broke down the meaning of love to them. That is why a good number of verses were dedicated to explaining the concept of agape love to them.
Just as it was in the days of Paul, so is it now. There are a lot of ideologies on forgiveness and what it should be. Ideologies inspired by human thinking and standards. It is important that we uphold God’s definition of love and propagate it. It is time to renew our minds and understand what God’s position on forgiveness is so we can fully walk in that light.
To love with the Love of God is to keep zero record of wrongs done to you, I pray we all receive strength to walk in this light. Amen.
