Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.- Hebrews 13:2
The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. He said, If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by. Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. After he had given them food to eat, they asked him, “Where is your wife Sarah?” “There, in the tent, ” he said. Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.” Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” Then the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
In our verse for today, we are admonished to be kind to strangers, because we may just entertain angels. The above passage is a classic example of that verse, Abraham’s insistence on giving the three men water and a place to rest was what opened him and his wife up for that blessing. Had Abraham not been discerning, the men would have passed by. We see that even though Abraham had the spirit of discerning, his wife did not. Sarah had every cause to doubt what she was told, considering her age and her husband’s. In this realm, It is medically impossible for a woman to bear a child in her old age. Her only mishap is that she failed to discern the source of that word, which is the author of life – God Himself. It is my prayer that out of lack of discernment, those closest to us will not be a hindrance at the point of our breakthroughs.
In a world where wickedness abound, it is difficult to be kind to strangers for fear of being harmed or robbed, I pray that our spirits will be ignited to discern who is good from evil, so that we can accomplish what God has ordained for us. Amen.
