I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest, and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth. – Isaiah 62:6-7
In the verses preceding the above, we see the prophet Isaiah speak about a time to come when God will vindicate the people of Israel before the nations. How He was going to give them a new name, and how they were to be a crown of splendor and a royal diadem in His hand. During this time, Assyria was encroaching on modern-day northern Iraq and moving westward toward the Mediterranean. It first destroyed Aram (present-day Syria), followed by the Kingdom of Israel, and finally subjugated Judah.
We know that a watchman’s primary task is to be vigilant day and night so he can spot danger from a distance. The phrase, “I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night,” gives the people confidence that God is watching over them and will see to it that what He has promised happens.
He goes on to charge His people to constantly remind Him about the promises He has bestowed upon them. Jesus told the Parable of the Judge and the widow to teach us the need to be persistent in our petitions to God. This is not to suggest that God ever forgets His promises, no. It means that God has given men power to speak His promises into existence, that prerogative is ours only, and He is looking to us to exercise it.
Our prayers are able to move barriers and strike through any opposition that hinder the realization of our blessings. Remember Daniel, who relented in prayer for 21 days. Scripture confirms that on the very first day he sought out to pray, God answered Him. For 21 days, though, the Prince of Persia resisted the angel of the Lord who carried the message. The angel could not break through until Michael gave him more support.
I always think of what would happened if Daniel had not persisted.
Do you ever ask yourself how much you may have missed because of your lack of persistence? How better would our lives be if we persist in the place of prayer to enforce God’s promises? It is my prayer that we will be rejuvenated in the Spirit, so we can persistently stand on the word to enforce the promises of God in our lives.
