Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. – Matthew 7:24-25
A foundation is the main supporting component of any building structure. It is the lowest part of the building which is in contact with soil and transfers all structural load to soil safely. The purpose of a foundation is to hold up and hold together the structure above it, rarely will you hear that a house with a strong foundation has fallen apart.
Jesus likens a man who puts His words into practice to a house that has been built on a rock. A house built on a rock is fortified and has great resistance against the elements and cold harsh winds because its foundation is firm and strong. This is a blessed assurance Christ wants us to rest on today, that as long as we put His words into practice and depend on it entirely, we will be unshakable in the face of life’s storms.
Let’s consider Job, scripture describes him as a God-fearing man who experienced the harshest of winds and still came out with his faith intact. In addition to experiencing extreme bodily suffering, Job also lost all of his possessions and his children died. He overcame all this because the word of God was a solid foundation for him.
Anything from an unexpected death to a divorce, a lost job, a misbehaving child, a chronic disease, or a loveless marriage can cause havoc in our life and Christ makes this clear in John 6:33- “In this world we will have trouble.” He goes on to add this – “But be of good cheer! I have overcome the world.”
Be of good cheer, for Christ, our rock, has already conquered everything in this world, so even when life’s storms hit us with a fury never seen before, we will overcome. He has, and we will too.
